Brac Island is the longest and most elevated island in central Dalmatia, 48km long, 14 km wide, covering 394 square kilometres. Brac has an extensive and fascinating history as it has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Brac is most famous for its beautiful white building stone which has been exploited since ancient Rome. Diocletian's Palace in Split was built from Brac stone and it is still used in the construction of buildings as far afield as Europe and north America. Supetar is the main port of entry on Brac Island as well as its administrative centre. With around 3500 inhabitants, Supetar is the largest town on the island. The harbour is an attractive place for a stroll and is backed by a small network of medieval streets lined with local cafes and small shops.
